The perfumer blends essences derived from nature, and inhales the spirits rising from the beaker. They record their inner experience in a book of formulas. The civet is an animal that was used in natural perfumery in the old days, the secretion from its glands were used to make musk, but nowadays it is nearly impossible to find an ethical way to keep the animal to use its scent for perfume making. It is an arcane essence that was once used a powerful fixative to help the perfume last longer. Modern perfumes have a greater variety of natural fixatives to choose from and synthetic perfumery recreates the civet using chemistry, but it is said to be noticeably unlike the original scent.
What if the civet knew it was captured for this purpose? Would it use its own scent to create a blend, or perhaps create a new smell that would disable the need to use civet all together. One can only wonder…
